I cheated on Hane with Tomoe Sushi and I liked it. Scratch that, I loved it. Located in the NYU area at 172 Thompson Street(between Bleecker & Houston), Tomoe is Phenomenal with a capital “P”.
Positives:
1. Top Quality Fish. It is on par (if not better) then “credible” sushi spots. To give you a frame of reference, it received a 26 for food on Zagat.[other famous sushi places with 26 are Nobu and Blue Ribbon]
2. Tremendous Specials Menu. I had Tofu buns to start similar to David Chang’s pork bun at Momofuko, but substitute pork for tofu. Question: Where do they get those buns? If you know, please contact me immediately.
3. The Avocado is Like Butter. I am an avocado snob; I get it on everything from sandwiches to eggs benedict. Tomoe passed my avocado test with flying colors.
4. It’s Cheap. Analysts, students and “cool” job people can enjoy. I got two rolls, a salad, and shared an appetizer for $25.00, including tip.
Negatives:
1. The Service is Forgettable. Wait, you want water with your meal?
2. It Doesn’t Look Like Much From the Outside (or Inside) If you are all about ambiance; this isn’t the place to go to. To put it in perspective, Zagat also rates décor, and Tomoe gets a 9…(out of 30)
3. My Love for Tomoe isn’t Revolutionary. Unfortunately, they don’t take reservations and the only way I could dine on a Wednesday at 9:30 (for two) meant I had to eat at the cramped sushi bar (I hate doing that!) but I would do it again for Tomoe.
Side note: There is a Toto Sushi one block away (closer to West 3rd), which is the wrong place. If you walk in by mistake (like I did), then go back toward Bleecker.
